ABSTRACT:
Pot culture experiment was conducted to study the effect ot Hydrogen uptake positive (Hup+) and negative (Hup-) strains of Rhizobium along with the different levels of NO3- on mungbean (Vigna radiata L) var. G-65. Hup+ strains have been found superior than that of Hup- strains in terms of all the growth characteristics and N2 fixation. Hup+ strains (R-1 & R-2) showed the maximum number and dry weight of the nodules, leghaemoglobin, nitrogenase and hydrogenase activities of nodules at the 20 ppm level of NO3-, while the nitrate reductase activity of leaves, dry weight of shoot and total N-uptake was maximum at the 30 ppm level of NO3-. Hup+ strain R-2 fixed more N2 in the presence of 20 ppm NO3- than that of Hup+ strain R-1.
