ABSTRACT:
Lactuca serriola Linn (Kahu) is one of the important medicinal plants of India. The seeds yield 35% oil. The characteristics of the oil are as follows: Specific gravity 0.9127 ar 250C, refractive index 1.4685 at 250C, saponification equivalent 295 (S. V. 190), iodine values (Wij’s) 1.28 and the unsaponifiable matter 1.6 %. Lovibond colour 1/2” cell 8.6Y+0.5 R flash point (open cup) 1900C. The fatty acid composition (Wt%) of the oil analysed by gas liquid chromatography is myristic 0.7 reported for the first time, palmitic 1.0, stearic 2.1, oleic 32.2 and linoleic 64.0.
