ABSTRACT:
Dental caries is the disease of the calcified tissues of the teeth characterized by demineralization of the inorganic portion and destruction of the organic substances of the teeth, which leads to cavitations. Streptococcus mutans is Gram positive spherical shaped bacterium. It is the normal flora of oral cavity. The bacterium has a polysaccharide coat that allows to stick to teeth and also to damage heart valves. It also produces acid from sugar in saliva which promotes erosion of tooth enamel. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics has led to an increase in antibiotic resistance among microorganisms. Bacteria become resistant to antibiotic by different ways. R-plasmid often contains genes for resistance to several antibiotics. Plasmid can be transferred between bacterial cells in a population and between different but closely related bacterial populations. Patent suffering from antibiotic resistant strain fail to respond antibiotic treatment. So there is a continuous demand of new drug. In the present study antibacterial activity of Allum sativum, Cinnamon zeyanicum and Syzium aromaticum was studied against dental caries inducing MDR StreptococcuS mutans. Isolation and identification of Streptococcus mutans was done by morphological, cultural characteristics and standard biochemical tests. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed by Kirby Bauer's disc diffusion method. The most common pattern of multiple drug resistance of isolates of Streptococcus mutans observed was amoxycillin-ampicillin-tetracyclin-nalidixic acid. Antibacterial activity of medicinal plant is studied by agar (well) diffusion method. It was found that Allum sativum showed highest antibacterial activity, Cinnamon zeyanicum and Syzium aromaticum showed moderate antibacterial activity.
