ABSTRACT:
Micronutrients such as B. Cu. Fe. Zn. Mn. Mo. Cl and Co play a specific role in the growth and development of plants. Although there are number of reports showing positive response of optimum concentrations of molybdenum. iron and zinc in increasing N2 fixation and other growth characteristics of lguminous crops (Sharma and Chahal. 1983; Ajakaiya, 1986: Saxena and Rewari. 1991) yet no information is available on the optimum concentration of these micronutrients on the germination of seeds. Therefore, an in vitro experiment was conducted to find out an optimum concentration of Mo. Fe and Zn for seed germination of mungbean.Healthy seeds of mungbean( Vigna. radiata L.) Var ML-267 were surface sterilized by dipping in 0.1 % HgCl2 and alcohol (95%) for 2 minutes and 3 minutes respectively. These seeds were washed several times with sterile distilled water to remove surface sterilizing agent. Surface sterilized seeds were kept in different concentrations of Mo (0,2,5. 10 and 15 ppm), Fe(0,2,4,6,8 and 10 ppm) and Zn{0,2,5, 10, 15,and 20 ppm) for 15 minutes. Twenty seeds of each treatment were then transferred aseptically to Petri plates containing sterilized filter paper. Sufficient sterile distillled water was added into the Petri plates whenever required to keep the seeds moist. G_erminationof seeds was counted after ev.ery 24 hrs upto 7 days. Observations such as shoot and root length of seedlings and changes in their colour were recorded.
