ABSTRACT:
Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana Linn) pericarp traditionally is used to treat several diseases, such as hyperuricemia, hypercholesterolemia, constipation, and as antiinflamation agent. This study was done to evaluate the inhibiton effect of aqueous extract of mangosteen pericarp in hypercholesterolemia animal models. Aqueous extract of mangosteen periscarp were made using boiled water and the extract were dried at 60°C. The extract was adminestered orally at doses of 720 and 1440 mg/kg bw, and simvastatin at dose 15.3 mg/kg bw was used as comparator. Male Wistar rats with high cholesterol feed and prophylthiouracl (PTU) as hypercholesterolemia inducing agent is used as animals model of hypercholesterolemia. Total blood cholesterol level was observed once a week over 4 weeks. The result showed that the increasing of total cholesterol level was inhibited after 14 days administration of aqueous xtract of mangosteen pericarp at doses of 720 abd 1440 mg/kg bw compared to control group (p0.05) and similar to simvastatin 15.3 mg/kg bw (p>0.05). The mangostecn extract at dose of 720 mg/kg bw could inhibit total cholesterol level by cumulative 217.9% over 4 weeks, dose 1440 mgfkg bw could inhibit by cumulative195.7%, and simvastatin 15.3 mg/kg bw could inhibit by cumulative 336.67%.
