ABSTRACT:
SargasSsum tenerrimum J. Agardh. is a brown marine algae having potentially sources of bioactive secondary metabolites that might represent useful leads in the development of new pharmaceutical agents particularly for cancer treatment. Free radicals attributes in aggravating the major chronic diseases pathophysiology in human such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis etc. Having antioxidant potential along with therapeutic effect will be added advantage in case of natural products. Considering the importance of the same, in present work we screened methanol extract of S. tenerrimum against various free radicals such as superoxide anion radical, hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxidase, reducing power, total antiotidant, hydroxyl radical scavenging. 1-1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical, total phenolic and total flavonoid content. Concentration dependent activity of methanolic extract of S. tenerrimum was observed on free radicals. The extract shown statistically significant DPPH free radical, superoxide radical, hydroxyl radical, and lipid peroxidase scavenging activity Phenolic and flavanoid content was found to be (2.740.7 mg of gallic acid equivalent of per gram of extract) and (3.30.4 mg of gallic acid equivalent of per gram of extract), respectively. Total antioxidant and reducing power of the methanolic extract was (2.80.4 mg of ascorbic acid equivalent of per gram of extract) and (10.662.59 mg of ascorbic acid equivalent of per gram of extract), respectively. Therefore, S. tenerrimum could be considered as a potent source of natural antioxidant and further can be evaluated for potential anti-cancer activity.
