Abstract: The present
study was aimed to investigate Anti-diabetic and antioxidant activity of
Xantolis tomentosa extract (Family: Sapotaceae). It is commonly found in the
various north east and south regions of India. The aerial parts were collected,
shade dried and extracted with ethanol using Soxhlet extractor. Anti-diabetic
activity of ethanolic (EEXT) extracts of Xantolis tomentosa was carried out on
Wistar albino rats. The observation showed The ethanolic extract of Xantolis
tomentosa (200 and 400 mg/kg, p.o.) showed significant reduction (P< 0.05)
of fasting blood glucose levels in streptozotocin induced typell diabetic rats
on the 10 and 15 days. In the oral glucose tolerance test, the extract
increased the glucose tolerance. It also brought about an increase in the body
weight of diabetic rats. The extracts were also evaluated for antioxidant
activity by free radical scavenging assay using DPPH and showed a prominent
antioxidant activity but were comparatively lower than standard significantly
(P < 0.05). Further studies are needed to be done to isolate the active
phytoconstituents responsible for bringing the Anti-diabeticactivityand
antioxidant activity.
