Abstract: Caesalpinia
bonducella is an endangered medicinal plant of family Caesalpiniaceae. Its
common name is Gataran. The genus Cacesalpinia has more than 500 species, of
which C. bonducellla has been reported for treatment of many diseases. The
objective of the present review is to summarize the research works related with
the ethanopharmacological studies on C. bonducella L. Various advance search
engines were used for literature search like Google Scholar, Pub med &
Inflibnet. In Vedic literature C. bonducella has been described to cure a
number of diseases like cancer, asthma, tuberculosis, fever, blood sugar, eye
sores, hemorrhages, leprosy inflammation and diabetes. Pharmacological studies
reveal that it shows anti- inflammatory, antimicrobial, antirheumatic,
antiulcer, anticancer and antidiabetic activity. Various groups of
phytochemicals have also been extracted from seed and leaf of this plant like
alkaloid, glycoside, flavonoids, saponins, tannin, terpenoids, steroids, oils,
sterols, phenols and resins etc. All pharmacological and phytochemical studies
on C. bonducella provide evidences for its use in Ayurvedic medicinal system.
