Abstract: Vitex
negundo Linn. a medicinal plant commonly known as nirgundi belongs to the
family Verbenaceae. It is much branched deciduous shrub found almost in all
part of India. The plant is well known to possess several medicinal and
antimicrobial properties. It has been used as medicine since ancient time. The
present work was aimed to study the antibacterial property of Vitex negundo.
Water ethanol (50:50) extract of nirgundi was investigated against two bacteria
E. coli and B. subtilis. We reported that the water ethanol extract of nirgundi
posses more antibacterial property against both the bacteria as compared to the
tetracycline. It is very necessary to apply biologically safe and eco friendly
drugs in nature which also act as antibacterial agent. The Vitex negundo posses
potential antibacterial property to utilize it for commercial purpose.
