Abstract: Present work
was designed to perform phytochemical screening, estimate total phenolics,
flavonoids content and antiotidant activity of Pueraria tuberosa tubers. The
dried powder of Pueraria uberosa tubers was extracted exhaustively by soshlet
with ethanol and fractionated with hexane, ethyl acetate, and water. All the
prepared extracts were analyzed to identify the chemical compounds present in
the crude extracts. Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and colorimetric methods were used
to estimate total phenolic and flavonoid content in the extracts. In- vitro
antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH method. Phytochemical analysis of
ethanolic extract showed the presence of major classes of phytochemicals.
Ethanolic extract and ethyl acetate fraction was found to contain highest
phenolic content and flavonoid. In-vitro antioxidant activity of ethanol
extract and ethyl acetate fraction was significant (pc0.05) and comparable with
the standard ascorbic acid. Result of the study shows that tuber of Pueraria
tuberosa are rich source of phenolic.and flavonoid compounds that can play an
important role in preventing the progression of many discases. These finding
provide evidence that the extract of Pueraria fuberose is a natural source of
antioxidant.
