Abstract: Antioxidant
prevents oxidative stress or damage of macromolecules such as carbohydrate,
proteins, DNA, lipid etc. due to free radicals. Most of the medicinal plants
posses antionidant properties imparted by a lot of secondary metabolites. In
the present study, antioxidant activity of different concentration
(Sul,10ul,20ul) of methanolic extract of flower of Sphagneticola trilobata was
evaluated in H,O; induced lymphocytes (10,000 cells) of Oryctolagus cuniculus L
by assessing the change in concentration of MDA,GSH,SOD.CAT and GPx and
compared the results with standard and established antioxidant, Melatonin, in 8
groups (I- only lymphocytes, II- lymphocytes+100 uM HO, II- lymphocytes+100 M
HO, +Sul PLE, IV. lymphocytes+100 uM H;O, +10ul PLE,V. lymphocytes+ 100 uM HO,
+20ul PLE, VI- lymphocytes+100 uM H,O, +Sul Melatonin, VII- lymphocytes+100 uM
HO, +10ul Melatonin, VIII- lymphocytes+100 uM HO, +20ul Melatonin). We found
the activity of all antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GSH, GPx) except MDA were
significantly increased in plant extract treated group (i.e.2.5320.10,
3.0320.25, 3.420.8, 6.60:0.10 respectively) with 20 ul of extract but still it
was found less effective as compared to melatonin treated group (3.16:0.11,
4.70:0.03,5.7+0.4, 9.640.06 respectively). MDA which is indication of lipid
peroxidation was found significantly decreased in plant extract treated group
(4.0:0 39) but still it was found less effective as compared to melatonin
treated group (1.30.19). From this finding, we can suggest that the flower of
this plant possesses antioxidant property and further research is required for
identification of specific plant compound which can be applicable for
pharmacological usage.
