Abstract:
Advancement in the knowledge of molecular mechanisms, cellular biology and
genomics not only increased the number of molecular targets but also demanded
shorter drug discovery timelines. The chemistry of natural products has been
investigated thoroughly in the recent decades, resulting in the better
understandıng. Computational methods have recently shown to be an important
complementary tool for study of pharmacological activity of natural compounds.
Bioprocess engineering has played a successful role in developing and producing
pharmaceuticals from fungal and bacterial origin. The principles of this
technology have already been exploited for commercial production of vaccines
and therapeutic proteins from animal origin. The potential and knowledge of
Bioprocess engineering has not yet fully exploited for commercial production of
biopharmaceuticals from herbal origin. Scale up of suspension cultures, tissue
and organ cultures of medicinal plants can overcome most of the shortcomings of
herbal medicines obtained from natural resources. Withanolides, for example can
interact with variety of IAPS with distinct architecture such as BIR region. At
the same time these withanolides can interact with diverse group of proteins
vhich are involved in inhibition of apoptosis. The bioprocess for production of
herbal biopharmaceuticals from Withania somnifera with defined chemo-profile
has been developed.
