Abstract.
Recently
gemini surfactants have attracted considerable attention due to their diverse applications
and novel molecular architecture differing with regard to polar head groups, the
hydrocarbon chains and the type and. size of the spacers. The present paper reports conductometric,
surface tension and fluorescence measurements of physicochemical properties of some
novel gemini surfactants (alkanediyl-α,ω-bis (dimethylhexadecylammonium bromide)
(C16-s-C16. 2Br, where s = 3, 4, 6) and its
derivatives i.e. alkanediyl-α,ω--bis(hydroxyethyhmethythexadecylanunonmm bromide)
(C16-s-C16. MEA
2Br·, where s =
4, 6)) in
aqueous solution at 300 K. The interfacial parameters and aggregation number have
also been presented. Thermodynamic parameters viz. Gibb's free energy change for
micellizarion (AG0 m) and Gibbs free energies.of
adsorption (ads)
bas been evaluated. An attempt has been made to correlate
physicochemical and self assembling properties with their structure.
