Abstract: Plants are known to
contain unique chemical entities, which have been developed
by the pharmaceutical industry for therapeutic application against various diseases. Recently, a number of plant- derived quinones, particularly the 1, 4-naphthoquinonoid compounds, have emerged as new 'lead molecules' for designing prospective anticancer agents. Some of these plants have been known as ingredients in traditional medicinal formulations used by many folk-cultures in the world since ancient times. A brief overview is presented here to illustrate a few
of the medicinally significant quinonoids isolated from plants to combat the dreadful
menace of cancerous diseases.
Keywords: Plant
products; quinonoids; anticancer compounds
