Incidence of colour blindness among three groups of Binjhwars of Chhattisgarh

Abstract. Binjhwars a Dravidian tribe and is considered
to be an offshoot of the Baiga of Mandia and Balaghat district. In the present study
the Incidence of colour blindnees among three engogamous groups of Binjhwars have
been recorded. The present investigationwas carried out on 240 Binjhwars of Brule
Blnjhwars (130 males and 110 females), Saunjharas (90males and 100 females) and
21 O in
Binjhwars (110 males and 100 females) with the help of Ishihara Charts. The incidence
of colour blindness were absent in all the three groups in females whereas in males,
the highest frequency was observed among the Bade Binjhwars (5.38%) followed by
Saunihars (2.22%). On the whole, low incidence
of colour blindness was observed. The three groups of Binjhwars show a non-significant
difference with-respect to the incidence of colour vision defect. The present populations
were also compared with other tribal groups of Madhya Pradesh (reported by different
investigators). All the three sub-groups of Binjhwans did not show significant difference
with any other tribal groups of Madhya Pradesh except with the Bhatra, Muria, Dhurwa
and Gond.
