Abstact. A stochastic model has been formulated to analyse the combined effect
of a leader who acts as a pro-rumour source and the effect of anti-rumour source like
government media on the process of the spread of rumour leading to breakdown of law and Order.
The probabilities related to various states have been derived. The relative affects of the pro-rumour and anti-rumour sources have been discussed
by taking a particular case.
The results obtained have been applied
to study the appropriateness and timing of various control
measures taken by the authorities to restore normalcy.
