Abstract. The Shivaganga basin is a sub-basin of Shima basin which lies between 18°14'N and 18°24'N latitudes and 73°44'E
and 73°56'E longitudes.
The paper includes the results of geobotanical studies carried out in the
basin. An attempt is made to map the distribution of water loving plants and evalua1e their
significance in hydrogeological investigation. The result of geobotanical surveys carried out in the basin reveals
that amongst the numerous flora, the Phoenix sylvestris, Pongamia glabra,
Ficus glomerata and Eugenie
jambolana are quite good suggestive of
water table conditions between the depth of 4 to 10 mtrs below the surface level.
They
are also indicative of different
litho
units favorable for
occurrence of groundwater. After detail survey
in the basin, the author is of opinion that this technique
is of immense use in locating suitable sites for open wefts
for irrigation purposes
in drought prone area of Maharashtra
